Of all the cars I’ve owned, my beat-up old Jeep Cherokee was the only one I had any real affection for. I loved that thing. It eventually died, and I haven’t gotten another 4WD since. I’m thinking about it now, and I’m torn between one of the several new Jeep models, vs getting a good used Cherokee and upgrading it with newer parts. I loved the solid axles, rugged suspension, and very reliable I-6 engine in the Cherokee, as well as the compact size. Is there a new model that can compare?

In my opinion if you had the money the Commander (V8)would be the way to go or possibly a Wrangler Unlimited… I am not a fan of teh V6 but there isnt enough data to say they are POS’s yet,, only hearsay and biased assumptions… I would like teh last year Cherokee 2dr, 5spd and 4wd… it would be a rare bird.. I currently drive a 78 cherokee chief w/ 401ci daily minus teh 8 mpg it is carefree. It did take some money to get it to its perfectly purring no oil burning/leaking state but it was well worth it….

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I believe the electric cooling fan is bad. How do you get it out without disassembling the entire front of the car?

the temp sensors do not control the fan. the fan is controlled by a pulse wifdth modulated realy under the right headlamp. the engine controller directly controls the relay looking at coolant temp, a/c input, a/c pressure, and trans temp. first check your fuse. it its good, unplug the fan connector. its about 1/2 way donw the shroud on the right side. 2 wires. jump the fan side of the connector, black to ground, green to voltage. the motor should run. if it doesn’t you probably need a relay. to get to teh relay you have to remove the front bumper cover and the relay is bolted to the sheet metal under the right headlamp. its mounted here to dissipate the high heat. if you need to remove the fan, remove the 4 10mm bolts that hold the fan shroud to the radiator support. for the bottom left bolt get it from underneath with about 4 feet of extension and a 1/4 inch drive 10mm swivel. you can remove the top radiator hose for more clearace, but hte assembly will come out if you don’t. once the bolts are out and you have it unplugged, take it straight up and out. there are alot of things to work around, and the plastic is fragile. once the shroud is out, remove the 3 bolts that hold the fan to the shroud to remove the fan assembly. i would recommend seeing your dealer before you start any of this. many grand cherokees with both 4.0 and 4.7 engines had a recall come out last year for the fan motor.
